My friend accidently deleted a message thread that hadgone back at least a year via Google messages. She did not have samsung backup or Google back up turned on. She looked for the undo button but could not find it. Is there any way of retrieving the text thread?

Unfortunately, you can't get back texts you've deleted from Google Messages. Per the pop-up you get when you delete a message they are permanently deleted.1754668462737.jpg

I have found a way to retrieve SMS messages that were deleted. When you use the back up and restore method to switch phone content from old phone to new phone, it allows you to select content to move over. Use the same method here. Select "back up and restore" and DE-select everything except sms and select restore and your messages will be restored if you deleted them. It will restore EVERYTHING you deleted, but you will get back what you needed in the process. I have had to use this when i accidentally deleted and entire thread before. Works like a charm every time! There's no need for third party apps when Samsung has an unexpected failsafe built in. I do not know if other device manufacturers have this gem built into their phones, but its always worth trying.

They already said that backup was not turned on, so there is no retrieval. Even if backup had been turned on, it's only good for retrieval if the error was discovered before a new backup overwrote the old one

Hello,

I did this same thing but do have a backup that was completed 2 days prior.  Any way you could help me with getting that back up to restore? These was a very sentimental thread and my darn fat finger hit the wrong message.  I appreciate any help you could give me.

If your backup is two days old, and you deleted the chat after that and before a new backup overwrote it, you can restore just the messages. Go to accounts and backup, select your Samsung account, choose restore data and then select messages. If you had been using sms backup, you can restore just the specific chat.

There isn't a restore data option after using those steps. It shows this.... does it matter that all msgs go through Google now?

It's the Samsung backup.. Google backup Can only be restored if you reset your phone. Your backup gets overwritten every night. The messaging app is just a shell it should not matter if you are using Google or Samsung messages. Also, here's a tip for the future. Google messages had an archive feature. To avoid drleting an important conversation that may be inactive, archive it. This hides the chat from view, but it will still be accessible and will unatchive of you get a new message in it, but you can archive it right back.

For some reason it doesn't give me that option.  I appreciate the archive suggestion.
