No long back story. Been using Droid for 25 years or more. Recently my notification tones will no longer stay attached to the contact in text apps. Google, messages. We used Verizon message plus for ages and it was great. Now if I delete a conversation or group of texts, the next time that contact texts, I get the default tone. I've chased so many "fixes" and nothing I've tried works. This started since I've had to use a different text service. I've always had specific tones for people. So I don't go to the phone for bs texts. Oh and while we're at it. Why is is it of the text screen is open theres no tone at all. I don't always exit out of the text app. I text and go. Then 10.min later discover that person texted back. But because the screen was on and open to the text app it didn't alert me. Like it thought I was still watching. Thank you for any time anyone gives me.

In Google Messages, you can set notification sounds for individual contacts by opening the conversation with that person, tapping on their name, scrolling down to notifications, and selecting the desired tone.

When you delete a message thread entirely, you clear the notification sound because it is associated with that specific thread rather than that specific contact. The best way to manage this is to turn on automatic deletion for your old messages rather than deleting manually. This helps you avoid deleting your individual threads in order to maintain the desired notification sound.

When the messaging app is open, You don't get the standard notification sound because Android assumes you are actively looking at the app. Rather, Google messages uses a subtle "blip" sound when the messaging app is open and you are actively looking at it. This is standard messaging behavior for most messaging apps on most devices regardless of platform. To ensure you don't miss notifications, get in the habit of either closing the app or locking the device after you send messages.

Hope this helps!

The Verizon messages (messages +) app was discontinued 12/2024. You need to switch to Google Messages or deal with what you're dealing with now.
