I got the new dryer flex and just got them in December, Samsung told me the light should turn on by itself as soon as door is opened, but it doesn't if the machine is not power on.
not sure if this model doesn't have that feature because I got a service tech and he said it should be like that........I had Samsung before these new ones and the light will go on when door was opened.
I am sorry to hear about this. The short answer to your question is, yes the dryer power needs to be on to turn on the light. Slightly longer answer - this model uses a door sensor instead of a physical switch, and an LED module for the interior lighting. While more energy efficient, it does require the panel to be powered up to enable the light.
