The arrow for expanding notifications should be a bit bigger, even on the s23 ultra I regularly misclick and the app opens instead of expanding the notification

Have the same issue and it's frustrating. You must be exact in tapping that drop arrow or the app opens and you lose an entire stack of notifications.
