You can actually use any messaging app you want, including Samsung until it dies. However, if you want RCS functionality among other things Google is your only choice.

I might be wrong but you can go the regular message app it is in your phone you don't have to just use goggle messages

It's giving the option to upgrade to Google message app. I did upgrade because it was getting annoying the pop-up message to upgrade. What I did is I set Google message app as default, and afterwards, I went back to the Samsung message up and set it back as my default message app. I didn't delete the Google message app, so I'm hoping the pop-up won't happen again.

Why can't I message my son but I can message everyone else? I have to change over to Google messenger to send him a message because it is RCS?? Why?

Maybe. I'm not even getting messages anymore on samsung messages.

You answered the question yourself, it's RCS and Google has the RCS functionality.
