Correct Sleep Score.jpgIncorrect Sleep Score 01.jpg

Hello,

I've had my SAMSUNG Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46mm for a few months now. One problem that occasionally occurs is shown in the two images above. The first one shows a correct result, where the sleep start time is 10:30 PM and the end time is 4:40 AM, which are within a few minutes of the start and stop times I had set up on my watch and which were the times I actually slept. The second image shows what sometimes happens, where the start time is 12:20 AM, even though I went to bed at about 10:30 AM. As I mention above, this start time, or close to it, occasionally happens. I'd be interested in suggestions on what causes this error and how to stop it. I always tightly attach the watch to my wrist and make sure there is a lot of battery time left.

Regards,
Bill

The late start time sometimes happens when the watch does not register your vitals as low enough to be considered in a sleep state.  The gap sometimes can happen for a variety of reasons: your brain was asleep and your body wasn't, or your watch became loose or out of position for reading your vitals, as sometimes happen if you rub your arm against something in your sleep. Since it isn't reading your vitals, it can't register you as sleeping or awake, hence the gap.

Thank you. I do have one question, which is why I'm not sure your response quite fits my problem. If any (or many) of the possible instances you mention are the cause, why would the start time when incorrect always be around midnight? I would think that the start time would vary instead of always being around midnight, such as the example I gave being 12:20 AM.

A loose watch doesn't seem to fit (no pun intended) because in that case one might expect that sometimes the sleep would start at 10:30 PM as scheduled and then stop recording later on. Keep in mind, when the sleep doesn't start on time, it almost always starts around midnight.

One possible cause is that when watching TV before going to bed, I often will dose on and off. Maybe that behavior is so consistent that so is the sleep start time. Seems a bit unlikely, but I cannot think of anything else that would be consistent.

I'd appreciate other ideas.

Did you set your target sleep times?  Go to the sleep tile and click on the menu dots and set your target.  You will get a clock image to input your normal sleep hours.  The default may be set to midnight. Or maybe your body does not actually register as in a sleep state until midnight.  If your normal sleep hours differ from the default, just put in the time you normally go to bed i.e. 9:00 p.m - 6:00 a.m. and see if it changes.  Setting the sleep target also helps with determining if you are consistently hitting your target.

Here are the steps I used for setting up my start and end sleep times:

  • Press the upper button on the watch to view the face (time, etc.)
  • Scroll down and click on the gear icon .
  • Click on Modes.
  • Click on Sleep Mode.
  • I left Turn Off Now OFF and Turn on as Scheduled ON.
  • Scroll down and click on Set on phone. This takes me to Bedtime mode on my phone.
  • I have Turn on as scheduled ON.
  • Days shows all seven days.
  • Tap Set schedule.
  • The times shown are Start 10:00 PM and End 7:00 AM.
  • I changed to my desired times Start 10:30 PM and 4:30 AM the next day.
  • Set schedule now shows the desired times listed above.

realaud (or anyone else), let me know if I did anything wrong to set up my desired go-to-sleep and wake-up times. Again, when the recorded start time differs from what I set, it always starts at around midnight.

Well see what happens over the next couple of nights. Also you are talking about setting up sleep mode, which is different than setting your sleep target. You can turn on sleep mode manually at any time, it does not have to be automated. Just because sleep mode is on, doesnt mean you are sleeping. Sleep will be recorded whether sleep mode is on or not.

Last night to this morning (Jan 27 pm - Jan 28 am) my scores were within the norms: Sleep time 5 hours 38 min; 10:43 pm to 4:21 am.

Re: "Also you are talking about setting up sleep mode, which is different than setting your sleep target." This is a useful comment. I'll study it further.

It remains a mystery to me why some nights the results are as they should be, such as last night/this morning and once in awhile the sleep start is an hour and a half later. Consistently an hour and a half later, give or take a few minutes; not for example an hour late one time and two hours late the next time, etc.

Could this situation be related to sleep mode vs. sleep target that you mention?

Re: "The default may be set to midnight." I will look into this.

To be continued...

I think I have a solution concerning why the start sleep time varies. It appears that the time my watch begins to record my sleep depends on how much I dose while watching TV before going to bed. If virtually no dozing, the recording starts at around 10:30 or 10:40 if I go to bed at about 10:30. If I've dozed deeply before going to bed, the watch begins recording around midnight.

Last night, I dozed a bit but not as deep. Below is the result. Recording began at about 11:40 PM, and the results, shown in the image below, were still very good (e.g.  very good rem and deep sleep times).

So, I need to avoid as much as possible dozing before going to bed.
