Samsung S7 plus won't see my HDD

I am trying to connect my external WD 1TB hard drive, but I don't get any message and the tablet doesn't see it.

All I get is Android system: Charging connected via USB

Is there a way of resetting the USB port?

when you plug in are prompted anything in the notification window. if so long press

This is the problem?  I get no prompt at all.  Just says it is charging device, doesn't recognise the drive.  Works fine when connected to laptop

try using a different USB cord.

Already tried, going to format the HDD see if that helps
