A Series & Other MobileDo you have your contacts synced with your google account? Did you recently change your google account or log into your device with a new one? If so, that may be the reasoning as to why they'd be missing.

A Series & Other MobileGo to the contacts app (not the tab in the phone dialer. Once in the contacts app, click on the 3-line menu on the upper left of the contact list. You will get a slide out panel which will show an oval window - in that oval window you will either see "all contacts" or a pointer to a specific contact location such as phone, SIM, Google. If all contacts is not showing, tap the oval and pull up the list of contact locations and select all contacts and see if they return. Also, check the trash.
If that fails, you may have to restore your backup and see if they come back.

A Series & Other MobileWell, it's good you have a backup. You should merge them all old/and new on the phone or on the SIM into Google Contacts - I prefer Google contacts because I can access, add and delete from anywhere.
