I have a low-wattage wireless charger that I have used for several years with my Z Fold 4 and Note 10+ without any issues. However, when I used it with my new Z Fold 6 (with a Samsung S-pen case on it), the phone became very hot in a short period of time. I am concerned that there may be a defect in the phone's Qi charging system that could damage the phone or battery.

I used my Fluke infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the phone after it had been on the charger for only 1 hour and 15 minutes. The temperature had reached 114.7 degrees Fahrenheit, which is significantly higher than it has ever before.

In addition, the charger only increased the phone's battery level from 40% to 49% during that time, which seems to be a very slow charging rate.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues with their Z Fold 6 or if there is a known issue with the phone's wireless charging system. I would appreciate any information or advice that anyone can provide.

That does sound a little higher than normal, but still well within normal phone ranges. The CPU on an 8 gen 3 can often run up around 70 C (158 F). My guess is there was some process stuck in the background, but wireless charging is inherently inefficient with more energy lost via heat than wired charging. Obviously if it continues to run extra hot, I'd reach out to Samsung to troubleshoot further. Also, some wireless charges come with built-in fans to help mitigate the issue.

Side note, I have found temperatures on my Z Fold 6 to be much better in general since the newly released August update was installed on my phone.

Hello Rayzer, Thank you for being part of the Community, and for reaching out. We understand the concern with the phone getting hot while charging wirelessly.

Whether you're using a phone, tablet, smartwatch, or earbuds, all Galaxy devices have a set temperature range, where they operate at their best. While they may feel warm under certain conditions, like charging, this does not affect the device's lifespan or performance. However, if your devices get too warm, it could cause some issues. Give this link a try: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00076952/ You can also try clearing the cache partition of the phone.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key, then press and hold the Side key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 - 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  5. Press Side key to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Side key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  8. Press the Side key to restart the device.

A final troubleshooting step would be to factory reset the phone. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00062029/

If your phone is getting too warm to touch, repairs would be recommended in order to have the technicians evaluate the device. You can use the following link to find a list of service centers in the U.S. that can do the repair:  https://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/ or by contacting customer support at 1-800-726-7864.
