You can actually do this a few different ways. you can bring up your messages making sure that you are in a message and press the 3 dots or settings button. Then select Customize wall paper. It should have black as a selection but if not then you can use a screenshot of a black background, a picture, or you could possibly turn on dark mode and then black should be an option. Hopefully that helps.
