Every since last Android update

Ever since the last Android update recently.When we got the little orange dots at the top right of many of our icons (which I believe means they have microphone attributes) we have lost the little numbers that used to be in that position to tell you when there's a message waiting for you...

It's nice to know which apps have microphone ability that you might want to shut off, so it's not listening to you... But every single day we needed those little numbers!! So I keep having to open all of my typical apps to see if there's any messages in there waiting for me to look at!!
