Where have the emoticons gone?

For texts, calendar, etc I'm not seeing the emoticon button anymore. It'll sometimes give a suggestion for one, but why can I no longer pick my own?

You might need to click on the 3 dots in the toolbar bar and re add it

The 3 dots for me just shows word suggestions. The only app that I can still choose emoticons in is samsung messenger. This has been a very recent issue because until recently I was able to access them in all apps where there is text entry. I've always used samsung keyboard, so maybe there was a recent change made on that? But then why is it only possible in samsung messenger? Thanks
