The good news is you can silence notifications and turn off vibration for a particular chat. It will still appear in your list and you might still see the notification bubble, but you won't be bothered by the incessant noise of the notifications of a particularly active chat. I understand (though I can't prove it yet) that if all partipants, or at least the originator, are using RCS in Google messages, you will be able to leave the group. I don't understand why that should be a restriction. Why should we be held hostage to a chat we don't want to be in?
