Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

I tried the help desk here, and they told me to check try to disable the following.

Settings > Display > Adaptive Color Tone {Disable}

Settings > Wallpapers & Style > Dim wallpaper when Dark mode is on {Disable}

Settings > Display. Eye Comfort Shield. {Disable}

It did not fix the issue

I tried every fix floating around but nothing worked. Even Natural screen mode on S23U looks punchier than S24U when set on Natural.

Yes. Same with s24 plus. It's something Samsung has to look into. I've never had to change any settings on a new phone to make the colors more vivid and saturated. It was always there already.

There is a temporary fix for those that do not like Vivid mode not working.

It requires to turn on Delveloper mode in about phone software information!

Go to settings, about phone, software information, tap on build number 8 times, it will tell you when you are almost there.

Then go back 2 times, scroll down and you will see Developer options.

Open Developer Options, type in the search box, CONTRAST, you will see a list, tap on Delveloper options contrast.

It will take you directly to contrast, by default it is set to standard, turn on high.
It will make your screen brighter!

Ps. Don't play with anything else, unless you know what you are doing!

Be very careful with that option!

On s23 ultra with UI 6.0 that will mess up with your Google apps - it will change appearance almost all apps, except messages maps and play store

For everyone saying they're returning their phones, its only been a few days. The phone RELEASES TOMORROW. I'm sure they will have a patch within the next few days. You guys have to be patient. The phone hasn't even been out a week yet. Give Samsung some time to sort it out.

If you are trading in your old phone, time is of the essence. I bought mine direct from Samsung and it arrived 1 week ago. They give me two weeks for my trade in to arrive at their trade in centre otherwise they charge me the full price. I now have 6 days to either fully cancel or get my old phone back to them, so if not fixed in two days max, my S24 Ultra will be going back.
