Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

I know, I'm bummed. I hope they do fix it for those hanging onto it. The front camera downgrade was another thing for me but figured I'd give it a chance at least as I heard the other things with it would make up for that, but it's pretty clear it's not as strong of a camera in the 24. And the colors in photos just really pushed me over the edge. I thought maybe it was just how the screen was making it appear with the 24 since that is off too but even with the images transferred to my 22, the colors aren't right. I really hope samsung sees all of these comments on these issues and fixes them soon! šŸ™šŸ»

I come from a s9+ so a lot can change in 7 years lol. I thought the clarity of them was good. Nice sharp etc. Have you tried to view them when mirrored to a TV?

The swipe buttons have not only been fixed, but also enhanced. It just takes the NavStar plug-in for Good Lock.

I am extremely close to sending mine back as well. I'm giving them until next week to see if they release an official statement regarding a software update that will address the washed out and dull colors on "Vivid" mode (should be more like pale mode) and the missing color icon notifications on the Always on Display. We lost the clock setting option in the Always on Display settings which allowed us to use GIFs or Images on the AOD. With that, we also lost color icon notifications on the AOD. On top of all of this, guess what just started happening today on my S24 Ultra? It randomly stopped charging wired and wirelessly. Went through three power adapters thinking it was my power bricks or USB-C cables that had gone bad. Nope, S24 Ultra just would not charge. I had to reboot the phone and then it started charging all of a sudden. One more week. If nothing, I can't believe I'm saying this, but it will be i-phone pro max for me. This hurts my heart as I've been a Samsung Galaxy user over the last 10 years. But this botched release is too much especially after I spent close to $1,600 USD on the 1TB including additional accessories. This is unacceptable!

I'm going to try Pixel 8 Pro before I quit android. If that's not good enough, then I guess it will be the dark side (iphone....ewww). Sent my S24U back Monday.

I agree. Samsung it is unfair to take away our choice. Those who like natural hues simply choose it and those that like vivid choose that. Simple. Seems like saying there is a choice for vivid when there is no "vivid" is deceiving the consumer. If we were told there wouldn't be any choice I would have stuck with my s23 ultra because I love the vivid colors! C'mon Samsung correct this!!!
