I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.
Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.
Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings. I use AOD to display as a bedside clock, with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! š
The issue is real. All the videos I took on my old S21U look washed out and lifeless on the s24U, and I do know that's not how they appear on my Windows PC, iPad and every other device I've reviewed them on. That's a big problem for me, as I record videos of my work on my phone, and I need to be able to trust how the content is represented on the screen. The vivid mode is ostensibly there, but it makes a negligible difference, if any. Also, the RGB sliders don't do anything either, so something is obviously broken. I was trusting Samsung would sort it out, but the contradicting statements by community forum administrators and chat support has me worried. Samsung needs to make an official announcement about this issue ASAP. As it is, I'm going to wait as long as possible before sending in my trade-in S21U, and if a fix isn't released or an official statement issued addressing the problem, then it will be the S24U that gets sent back instead. Honestly, with all of Samsung's display tech experience, I can't believe they let this slip past them.
My mom was excited for some new AI like live translator.. I told her no.. Will make sure that our phones are not a downgrade first.. So, I have 2 ultras that I will send back by Tuesday, because I leave for Hawaii Thursday for a week and refuse to keep phones that are a downgrade than my previous S23 Ultra. Have some friends who are disappointed too and are about to cancel their orders
Just received mine yesterday and screen looks so dull that if they don't fix it over this week sadly is going back and keeping my s21u this is unacceptable after I paid 1400 for a downgrade
Definitely holding out on sending in my S23 ultra trade in to see what they do. I am highly disappointed and tried to see if I would adjust to liking it as I used it but it's been about a week now and my eyes are still not happy. I can keep my 23 ultra and hope they do better with the outer screen size on the fold or Samsung is just not getting my money this year.
They have to be able to fix it with an update. It is just a oled screen right? Apply more contrast and increase the color saturation. And those who like natural, can just select natural, but at least give us a choice. Right now both natural and vivid are the same
Yep, they can easily add 5 color profiles if they wanted. It's about options, but instead they took away a well established option and assumed its name with an abysmal option.
