Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Vivid on both. They aren't 100% identical, but they are probably like 90-95% or so. Much closer than I ever remember them being. I'm either going crazy or something changed lol. I will check again tomorrow in daylight to confirm.

Hmm, interesting. I promise you I'm not saying this to get attention or cause drama. I'm just definitely noticing something different and very similar now.

I'm currently in the dark in my hotel room, not sure if that's affecting my color perception or not. Both phones on vivid and both on adaptive brightness.

I will check again in the morning in some daylight and see if my eyes have changed at all lol.

Maybe you're getting used to the S24U colors. šŸ˜„

I know I am. šŸ˜‰

Lol, I thought about that, but I don't think that can be possible since I have them side by side. If I no longer had my S23 Ultra, then I can see that happening. But they are looking so close to each other now.

I also want to clarify that I wasn't bothered by the color differences before today and was keeping the phone regardless. So I have no motivation to create drama here.

But it's noticeable to me, I'm just wondering if I'm alone lol.

Lol. I changed my wallpaper on my s24 ultra to a type of wallpaper with really punchy colors and enabled extra brightness on settings and now I am getting used to the washed out colors. I can only tell when I look at the "contacts" icon in my app drawer and the orange is washed out compare with my older phones

Nothing has changed for me. And I can tell right away. My work phone is an s20 and in the settings, when I change from natural to vivid, there is a huge difference in colors. Right now when I do the same on the s24, there is almost no difference between natural and vivid. I can only tell which is which by looking at the first picture, on the left upper side of the sky the dark blue sky is slightly darker. That's it

I was actually wondering about some kind of silent update as well, although I'm not sure it's possible. I've noticed my colors also seem to be much better than when I first setup my phone. They're still not as punchy when put side by side with my S22 Ultra, but they do seem to have improved some. I've also noticed that the saturation does appear to change some, depending on the environment and apps I'm using, even with the adaptive color tone and eye comfort shield turned off. Maybe that's what's making things appear better? I may just be getting used to it, but the colors on my S24 Ultra do seem more saturated than before. Also, there is still very little difference between Vivid and Natural modes.

So maybe I'm not alone. And yes, I meant to mention that the difference between natural and vivid is still barely noticeable to me. But the colors in general seem more saturated to me now all of a sudden and are very close to my S23 Ultra. I have the same wallpaper and home screen setup on both phones, so on doing an apples to apples comparison.

It's very interesting.

No change on any of my 3 phones.  The s24s are still washed out.   You can check you software info screen to confirm you're still on the same build #
