Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

I'm hearing there should be a fix coming with the next software update. I think the main problem is that Samsung released the S24 series too early and developers rushed through things. It's almost as if we're in beta testing mode, and there are bugs that need fixing. Otherwise, I feel that the display looks great and perhaps even better than the S23 ultra with the anti reflective coating on the new gorilla glass, despite not being able to use vivid mode as of yet. I think once we get that update fix, the display will be the best so far.

No issues with the colors to me and if Samsung decided to go more natural there's nothing wrong with that 1707097196957.jpg

That being said, genuine question... Why didn't anyone go to Verizon, Tmobile, AT&T ect. and do a real life comparison? Surely you could've seen this before making a purchase, right? Or easier yet, watch any one of the many reviews on YouTube?

I feel like it's akin to buying a jar of pickles the store is currently sampling, not sampling them, eating them when they get home only to proclaim they suck. Idk maybe I'm missing something.

Vivid setting is not working. It will be fixed. If you were used to having that on, yes the colors look muted.

The Vivid mode has been in place for literally decades now. And no reviewer or Samsung itself commented on such a impactful change. So I completely understand no one was expecting this weird change (or certainly not expecting to take away or replace something like a color profile which could easily have been retained alongside a new mode). I think this is the way to look at it given the history.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra 5G my pics :camera_with_flash: are super the only thing that's boring me is the colores when looking at live videos on Facebook the colores are 100% off and YouTube colores are BAD. Hopefully Samsung will do a over the hir update and get this fixed A.S.A.P. Hopefully or I'm bringing the cellphone :mobile_phone: back I not upgrading to get a cellphone that the resolution colores are off!"

Samsung said they are working on this issue. There's a few things that you can do like set the saturation to, "High" in Developer Options & a few other settings. I had to watch few videos to set mine up for the time being.
AOD sucks on the S24 Ultra, I can't see my Always on Display & there's no Brightness Settings that I can find for it. šŸ¤Ÿ

The home screen icons on the S24 (Anything But) ULTRA are so dismal, drab and uninspiring compared to my S10+ it's depressing to use this dead lifeless device. Not optimistic about a Samsung update as their description is these changes are intentional and the display is Fine Tuned as is. Samsung may do nothing but as a consumer I will do something and "Return to Sender" for my $1100 refund.

Turn vivid on and off in display settings. Does nothing... Known bug thst will be fixed and then vivid will work.
