Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! 🙂

I'm returning mine also, the screen was a main reason I didn't go for the pixel over Samsung but now they are closer to the same so I'll probably be going with the pixels from now on.

I have the Pixel 8 Pro and the S24u, I lasted a month on the Pixel before I swapped SIMS back to my S23U.
The battery life will make you down right angry. A $1050 phone should last ALL DAY, even for power users such as myself. I couldn't get the phone to last 12 hours.
If you don't like the non-vividness of your S24U, you will not like the Pixel!

The only thing I liked about the Pixel were the cameras, best point and shoot out there. Better than Samsung, better than an Iphone.
I shoot in promote, Samsung has better controls in ProMode.
I also miss some of the Ai stuff, hold for me and direct my call were killer features.

I gave those things up for better battery and a much better modem!

I understand what you're saying but if they're not going to address the screen color issue then I don't have much choice anyway if I want to upgrade. And as far as battery my battery never goes below 60%, so if it never goes below 40%, then oh well. I have missed having a phone I can "hack" so it's worth a shot. Plus I am constantly getting angry every time I see a new post about the pixel getting something that none of the other phones get. Assistant with Bard will be coming out soon for the pixel line so I will be looking forward to that. If I have to settle for a lackluster screen on the s24 then I will settle for a lackluster screen on the pixel. I do thank you for your input though.

Google Assistant with Bard is most definitely coming to the S24 lineup due to the new neuroengine on the Snapdragon 8gen3!

Yeah, Vivid mode is not working.

For me, that isn't a problem, I use natural, always have.

I did notice that when putting on a screen protector, it makes it less flat.

Outdoors, you LOSE the Anti-reflective properties.

I took off the screen protector.

I also wanted to do that but without the protector I don't want to risk scratches I'm I'm planning on returning it! Or will they accept returns with some scratches ?

Dude, if you're thinking about returning it is walking around with a screen protector for a couple of days such a thing?

Let me start off by saying that I don't fall into placebo stuff and don't get into hype much.

But just about 20 minutes ago I put my S24 Ultra and S23 Ultra side by side to make sure I transferred something over correctly. I immediately noticed something and it shocked me. The color and saturation all of a sudden looked nearly identical.

It was never this close before and I'm almost 100% sure it's not placebo.

Are silent updates a thing or even possible? I haven't received any sort of software update or anything.

I'm currently at a hotel traveling and didn't get pics at the moment. But can anyone else check that still has a S23 Ultra? They are looking almost the same now. I would say about 90-95% similar where it seemed further off than that before.

And before you bash me, I am 100% not doing this for attention or drama. It's just simply what my eyes are seeing.

Screen Mode on each phone ???

I have a S23U (backup phone)

& S24U side-by-side.

Nothing changed.

With Natural on both, basically no difference.

With Vivid, the S23U is punchier.

Vivid on both. They aren't 100% identical, but they are probably like 90-95% or so. Much closer than I ever remember them being. I'm either going crazy or something changed lol. I will check again tomorrow in daylight to confirm.
