Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

I get it. It's not as VIVID as your old device. I hope you don't return it because of this issue. Take it outside during a very sunny day, and you will appreciate the fact that you will never again have a problem seeing your screen.

For me, this is a tradeoff I would will gladly accept !

I changed my wallpaper, changed my icons. I am very happy with my phone!1707191022687_1707191022681_0.jpg

I did noticed the washed out colors at first. But I took my current wallpaper, ran it through the optimizer and made the colors more punchy on it and now I barely notice the wash out colors. Everything else about this phone rocks so I am confident that samsung will give us an update to fix the screen.
I believe they did the same thing on the s23 ultra last year and they increased the vibrancy or constrast with an update so they should be able to do it to the s24

I did the same. The little kids that want to take their ball and go home is ridiculous.
This phones display is amazing, outside it is even more amazing!

If you have the option to do so, we'll take the ball home... what's the problem!!!

The dismal, drab and lifeless icons on the home screen of the S24 (Anything But Ultra) I purchased are so uninspiring they literally affected my mood and made me sad and depressed. The vibrant and exciting colors were what made Samsung phones stand out above the rest. Samsung is telling it's loyal customers by their silence to "Take it or Leave it" Well I've made my decision. Boxed it back up and will be returning back to sender. For my $1100 refund as I refuse to settle for less.

Same.. Just got mine today.. considerably more muted and dull than my 4 year old Oneplus.. I'd rather keep the oneplus then be out 1500$ for something I'm not happy with, back it goes.. Samsung wont miss me.

"Samsung won't miss me" When I read that I got the biggest grin on my face. One of the Best comments I've read about this debacle. They maybe won't miss us but when these phones start going back in the thousands and they are using them as drink coasters maybe they'll get the point then. Big ups Elecy.
