Have you tried installing the Gmail app? they have an app specifically designed for their e-mail service. this is available on the play store as well as the Galaxy store, i believe.
Sure, been using gmail 20+yrs and changed phones numerous times never having this problem. New phone installed gmail with personal account but will not let me open or merge my work account with error saying "...it already exists on the device..." I can see it but my mail does not connect.
