Galaxy S25Using the Format option
Open the Chat or Gmail app
Go to a conversation
Enter a message
Tap the Action menu on the left
Tap Format
Select Italic
Tap Send
Using underscores
Open Google Chat
Go to a conversation
Enter a message
Wrap the word or phrase you want to italicize in underscores
You can also use a subset of Markdown syntax to format text messages in Google Chat. For example, you can add an underscore (_) before and after the words you want to italicize.
