This sounds like something in the background is consuming too many resources and slogging down your device. Check battery usage for any apps consuming more battery than should be expected in the background. Overheating is also a tell-tale sign of this.
Can also try booting into safe mode to see if the skip still occurs. That will isolate whether or not a third party application is the culprit.
