If you try Google Messages, make sure you change the wear app settings to allow notifications from Google Messages.

Which messaging app are you using, Google or Samsung? Whichever one it is, make sure that is the one you have set to send notifcations to the watch. Also, as @CEParsons said, check your smart device selection settings to make sure the notifications go to the watch and the phone at the same time.
