Does Smart Things need to be on the same WIFI network to operate a TV remotely??

I can tell you from personal experience that I have turned off my TVs 100km away from my house.

It doesn't for me. I'm able to remotely control my TVs from anywhere.

Gretings.  I'm being told by tech support that if you "have to be" on the "same" WIFI network for  this to work.  However, I'm talking about being 15nm away - not on the same wifi network.  In that case, according to them, it will not work.  I told them that the Genie Wall Switch app affords users this capability.
