Samsung tv audio out

I have my speakers plugged into my tvs optical audio output but something weirds going on.

When i have my sound set to "tv speaker" sound comes from my tv and speakers 

When I have "optical" selected there's no sound at all

What do you have the other end of the optical cable plugged into?

What's the model of the speakers so I can look them up?

Im oretty sure its sony mhc-gx450. it's old, I got them from a family member when they passed away (I have it connected via dac)

OK so it's not just speakers. It's two speakers, a sub and a receiver? Does your TV have the option to disable the TV speakers?

Does it not sound good with both the TV speakers and other speakers at the same time?
