a few months ago both worked. now when i try to dex to my fire-tv or roku i see the butterfly-flower background image with app icons on the top left of the television screen. i used to press the recent apps overlay button and there was a 4th button to use as a trackpad (no more). so i cant run any apps on the t.v.

also smart view no longer mirrors my cellular-telefones screen. when it first connects i see my fone screen/widgets on the t.v. for half a second and then immediately the screen flashes to the butterfly-flower background image (no app icons but a small white dot on the bottom rite). i can cast videos but i cant mirror. i tried opening email app on my fone and selecting app cast but it makes the email app into a smaller window on my fone but no change on the t.v.

I am sorry to hear of these issues using DeX and Smart View. I love using phone features to do things on my TV as well, and can understand how inconvenient it can be. Smart View can be used with Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 4.3 or above and with devices that support Miracast wireless display technology. This technology is built in to most newer Samsung smart TVs. However, your phone or tablet must be connected to the same network as your TV in order to use this function. If Smart View is not working, restarting or rebooting your device will usually solve the issue. Keep in mind that DRM-protected contents cannot be mirrored. Use this guide for troubleshooting: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01001514/#smart-view-or-screen-mirror-casting-...

For DeX, make sure you have it set up per this guide, and check out the section on troubleshooting at the bottom option: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00062657/
The complete DeX troubleshooting guide can also be found here (also linked to in the article on setting DeX up: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01110883/

If the troubleshooting does not resolve the behaviors, and you can rule out the TV as the culprit, it may be time to get your phone evaluated by a certified technician. You can do mail-in or walk-in service through this link: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/service
