5 seconds is too long when photographing spontaneous situations, especially with animals.

Start the Camera app.

2. At the top of the screen, tap the Self-timer icon. The timer pop-up should show you options that include Off, two, five, and 10. Tap the timer duration you want to use

I just tried that and there's no option to turn it off

Whoever made that the auto default doesn't have dogs.  Never trust someone who doesn't have a fur family member.
