Gmail may ask for verification if there have been changes to your account or how you accessed it. You might also be asked to verify your account to prevent abuse.
Possible reasons for verification requests
Account changes: You made changes to your account or the way you accessed it
2-Step Verification: You signed up for 2-Step Verification, which requires a verification code by text when you sign in
Anti-abuse measures: Google may ask you to verify your identity to prevent abuse
How to resolve verification requests
Pass the verification: Pass the verification process to recover your account
Reset your password: Reset your password to recover your account
Turn off 2-Step Verification: Open your Google Account, go to the "Security" section, select 2-Step Verification, and then select Turn off
Other things you can try Check your Gmail password, Delete all cache and cookies, Update your Windows or Mac OS, Check and update your security settings, and Remove and scan unsafe softwar

Quick question, but does this behavior happen within the app AND while accessing it via your browser as well? Have you tried clearing the cache from your browser, accessing it via another browser that you haven't used to access your Google account before, finally Sometimes, just uninstalling and reinstalling the app can reset the app to default settings. Other than that, check within the Samsung Members tools for your device and run the diagnostics for it. I'm one of the Google community experts, and if these steps were overlooked, it can be the causation factor to other problems down the road in other areas. Good luck.

Go to the settings menu...from there go to SECURITY AND PRIVACY. Once in that menu, click on UPDATES. Now you should see options for SECURITY AND UPDATE and GOOGLE PLAY SYSTEM UPDATE. Click on GOOGLE PLAY SYSTEM UPDATE. Your phone probably needed to update the Google Play System since Gmail and all other Google apps need to be manually updated by the Google Play System. Hopefully that helps.
