Did you buy a used phone that was improperly cleared? Meaning the previous owner forgot to sign it out of their Google account. The only way out of this would be to contact the previous owner (if known) or return the phone to where you purchased it.

Boot into recovery mode and select wipe data / factory reset and confirm , setup your Google account later.

I’ve tried that option several times. When you reboot, it always asks for a prior Gmail account and password which I do not have. So it will not let me go any further in the set up as a new phone.

Contact google and see if they can help you with their account.

this is the screen I get after reboot from wiping data and factory reset.

“this device was reset. To continue, sign in with a Google account that was previously synced on this device.”This is where I am stuck because I do not have the prior Google account that the phone was synced on.
