Galaxy S8 Wifi Issues

So I am posting here because after research I do not see anyone with this issue and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on what to do to attempt to fix it. 

 

What will happen is my phone will lose internet connection while connected to my Wifi. As shown in the screen shots below it has the Wifi Symbol along with an exclamation mark. When I go to the Wifi settings it states "Internet may not be available"

 

The only way to fix the issue is to turn the wifi off then back on. Now keep in mind that this does not happen all the time as It will happen spoardically throughout the day and there does not seem to be a specific app that causes this. This has happened while browsing the internet on multiple different browsers and it has happened while watching videos in applications such as Youtube, Twitch, Netflix, Hulu, etc.... This issue only seems to be affecting my galaxy S8 as the other devices on my network does not have this issue including my old Samsung S7 Edge.

 

What I have tried is the following in no particular order 

  • Turned the phone off/on
  • Cleared browser cache
  • Cleared the cache partition
  • Reset my wifi connections
  • Factory reset my phone
  • Reset my router
  • Verified my Router Firmware was up to date
  • Had Verizion send me a replacement phone. Same issue happens

My Router is the Google Onhub

Verizon Galaxy S8+

 >> Three Dots top right
   >>> Advanced 
     >>>> Wifi Control History

Two apps were in the history.

Support and Protection - No Change when unistalled or disables
Samsung Smart Switch - Force Disable -- The Wifi connection immediately changed from "Internet may not be available" to the normal "Connected".

Later, tests will be done on other problematic SSID connections.

My phone is only several months old and it worked perfectly up till sometime last week. Then (perhaps after last week's update?) wifi stopped being reliable. Exact same problems as mentioned below. As i use the phone for calls over wifi because my cell coverage is bad - AND i work from home - this makes the phone unworkable for me.  Need a quick fix or bye bye Samsung.

I spoke with a Verizon rep via chat and explained my issue with no internet access.  They had me go into the MyVerizon app and run a health check on my device.  The result of the health check said I had 1.5GB of temporary storage on my S8+.  Once I cleared the temporary files I was able to turn the Wi-Fi back on and viola, it worked.  I am not sure this is an end all fix, but it worked for me.  At work today I was not able to connect to the internet at all, so I am glad it is working now.

 

With Wi-Fi off

1) go to MyVerizon app

2) open the menu and select Devices

3) select Manage on the device you are having issues with

4) select Run health check

5) if you have any red exclamation points select them to see what caused it

6) for Storage, select Storage then Storage again

7) then select Temporary files

😎 select Clear temp files

9) turn on Wi-Fi

Hi all,

 

I just got Netgear Orbi too and I also have a new S8+. I found this thread by accident....

 

In any case, I think I've solved the issue after some trial and error. My solutions are:

 

1. Use a static IP address on your phone!

2. Disable the SSID-broadcasting of the 2.4 Ghz network or completely disable it.

3. Disable/uninstall/force stop "Smart Switch". I found this under Wifi/Advanced/Wifi-History as the only one having control over the Wifi. 

 

I've been running with the above setting for the last 24h without any issues.

Thanks for the info. Just uninstalled smartswitch and wifi seems stable again. Before, it was showing the exclamation mark every couple of minutes. Did not change anything on the wifi connection itself. 

 

Using an Orbi system with one satellite.

Why isn't Samsung responding to this thread anymore? At least tell us there is a fix in the works and will be rolled out in a future update.

Agreed--this problem has been affecting me since I got the phone (no other devices have any problems with my Netgear Orbi) and so far none of the tricks in this thread have helped. I've disabled Smart Switch, turned off 2.4GHz SSID broadcast on the Orbi, enabled the guest network, etc. Nothing helps, and the phone is practically useless on my home network, which sucks in particular because we use our phones to control all our devices via Google Home, Samsung Smartthings, etc.

I've tried all the methods above as well to no success. Just out of curiosity how do you turn off the 2.4/5 GHz signal on the Orbi? What I was thinking was to setup the guest network only on the 2.4 GHz signal and having the the S8 only connect to that one, to avoid the auto-switching the Orbi does in the background, that seems to cause the issue. 


It's also been reported that there is an issue with the fingerprint sensor causing the wifi signal to go out. Disabling the fingerprint sensor was supposed to be the fix as well. Tried that...still doesn't work. This is a software issue on Samsung's end and they need to fix this asap.

There is only 1 way to dissable the broadcast frequency on the orbi.  Simply going into the settings and deselecting broadcast ssid does not dissable the band.  In order to actually dissable either frequency band you would have to telnet into the router and inside the main configuration settings you can dissable the frequency bands.  This is not recommended unless you are familiar with the coding language required to change these settings as a wrong entry could render the orbi useless.  I would think a factory reset should recover it but i have not tried it.

Same Issue, after the TMO update. Bang symbol on wifi... I  have an orbi router. My work around involves me having to connect to my guest network... Seems to be working for me for now.
