Or an update that came out afterwards supposedly fixing the initial bug?

Samsung is ignoring the problem. 

There is something you can do that helps but doesn't fix the problem: 

Change the processing speed to high instead of optimized

Generally one needs to flash a bricked phone with latest firmware update to get back to full functionality.
