@user491 Look for the microphone icon in the quick panel. Click on it to enable (or disable) the microphone.

Thank you for your honest reply. I looked there, but do not see the microphone. Leave it up to me to get the only phone that does not have what it needs.

If you don't see a microphone icon in the lower left corner of the screen when the keyboard is active, you might try: Settings > General Management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input. However the icon is useless to me because it causes the phone to bring up the app selection screen, not the microphone. Bug? I do not have a microphone icon in the quick panel either. OP's original problem is not solved.

Edit: Go to the "Voice input" link above and select "Google Voice Typing" instead of "Samsung voice input". This worked for me. Glad to finally have a microphone!
