Change Google messages notification

In my messaging app I'm having difficulty change in my notification sound. I clicked on my messages then went to messages settings and I couldn't find where to change the notification sound messages on new incoming messages

Phone settings
Notification
Advanced settings
Manage notifications categories for each app
Then go to Google Messages and follow the pictures below

I have same problem. I just got Samsung Galaxy 24+ and there is no option for changing notification sound; just turning sound on or off. There is no notifications category at all in settings nor advanced settings

This must be turned on in the device's settings before it shows up in the app settings, please read the post before yours carefully as Garyb82 details what needs to be done quite well.

The toggle for manage notification categories is in settings/notifications/advanced settings and NOT in settings/advanced features.  Follow the pictures above.

I don't know why Google had to go and make it so difficult. Categories or no, you used to be able to set the default notification sound in the app settings.  One menu deep, not six.

Again, close google messages, THEN go to settings (outside of google messages, in the same place you get to your device's settings, like software updates, etc)  This will be there so long as you have updated to One UI 6.1.
