Media Controls gone from lock screen after latest update

Like the title says, I no longer have media controls on my lock screen, just a text blurb of what's currently playing. How do I get the controls back?

They came back after I performed a Google play system update on the settings (settings > about phone > software information > Google play system update). My phone restarted and now it's back. No idea if it was the restart or the update that fixed it.
