Can I set different notification sounds for messages?

Can someone tell me if there's a way to set different notification sound for messages? I really dislike when they're the same sound as other notifications like emails etc. I've scoured the internet and YouTube and have found nothing. I cam from apple with high hopes...this is a let down lol

settings > notifications > app notifications > messages > notification categories > incoming messages > sound

Open your phone settings go to notifications
Advanced settings
And toggle on
Manage notifications categories for each app
Then you will be able to set sounds for every app just long press on the app you want to change tap the little i in the corner click notifications and you will be able to change them

I did this already, but this is all I'm met with. I've clicked all of those settings already and still don't see anything about setting a specific ringtone for the app.

You click Notification Categories in your screen shot and to set separate rigntones for people that call you 

Open the Contact app 

select the contact you want to change 

tap the 3 dots more in the bottom right 

select Change ringtone/vibration

select Ringtone

Now you can pick separate ringtones for each contact you have

As noted  under notifications: advanced settings enabled to allow notification categories for each app. For the Messages app below any people or individuals you can see a New Messages category. Enable it and then click on it to set a notification sound.
