How do you change the ringtone for Google messages?

I tried going to settings-apps-Google messages-notifications and when I click on allow sound and vibration, nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong or is there a different way I could change the ringtone?

     First Turn This On:
   Settings  
⁃   Notifications  
⁃   Advanced Settings  
⁃   Turn "Manage Notification
     Categories for Each App" On .

     THEN:

   Settings  
   Apps  
   Google Messages  
   Notifications  
   Notification  Categories  
⁃   Click on "Incoming Messages" Text  
      ( not the switch on/off )
⁃   Sound  
⁃   Choose a Notification Sound. 

 OR   


⁃   Open Google Messages  ≻
⁃   Click on Your Pic / Avatar  ≻
⁃   Messages Settings  ≻
⁃   Notifications  ≻
⁃   Notification  Categories  ≻
⁃   Click on "Incoming Messages" Text  ≻
      ( not the switch on/off )
⁃   Sound  ≻
⁃   Choose a Notification Sound.
