Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

LOL, good to have some people from the Middle East in this thread to drive home the point like only they can šŸ™‚ Better watch it, Samsung, this one is starting with ritually burning your phone on the public square, it's not going to get any better from there šŸ˜„

Upgraded from a note 20 ultra and was very disappointed with the washed out crappy old looking display. Playing a 4k hdr youtube video both max brightness side by side and it's really bad. My old note 20 ultra has brighter highlights, better contrast, and the colors pop. What happened to the advertised 2600 nits. Why is my note 20 1500nit brighter? Both brightness maxed out and even s24 extra brightness enabled. Would think the old note was the new phone actually. Main reason why I buy these phones is for the amoled screens. Everything else is nice but doesn't matter if the screen we stare at the whole time looks washed out. I've never considered returning a new phone before but I might take these back if no fix is coming for a better vivid option. I'm worried it's something not fixable or the new anti reflection **bleep**. Really sucks on a phone this expensive.

These dull colors makes me return the phone. Feels like what 10 years back in time...I get it...longer battery time...but feels like looking at a 1960 faded color polaroid.

Yeah, literally! If you work with photo softwares the way the S24 display looks is like a retro photo filter

It is not brighter. It is more cartoonish vivid that you miss.

It's absolutely brighter aside from the dull colors. I don't have a 3rd phone to screen shot it. But I did blind tests with everyone in my household and friends they deem the s23 ultra more bright and colorful and the s24 clearer.

Classic Vivid is not cartoonish. It is the acknowledgement that a tiny device should not blend in with your environment but rather stand out and be accentuated. And even if you would defend the new Vivid mode (which almost does nothing from "Natural") you can't defend taking away options that Samsung itself has conditioned user to prefer (making it default on their own devices). I also have the S22+ here and it is in no way cartoonish.
