WhatsApp using my camera and microphone in the background

Can someone please help me understand why WhatsApp is using my microphone and camera in the background? While I am not using the WhatsApp application, I repeatedly see the app notification appear without any new message or call. It flashes quickly.

You can out the app to sleep and it won't run in the background. It will still work, but updates and notifications may be delayed.

Go to app permissions and disable camera and mic.
