Does anyone knw how to change the ringtone setting? Ive been trying to figure this out for the longest. Far as i can see, its the same as the notification as the phones system notifications. Its not seperate. Only thing i see to do is give each contact a ringtone and im not doing that.

If someone can help me, that would be great.

Well, I gave instructions above on how.  You don't have to give *every* conversation its own sound, just the ones you want distinguished from the others.

The ringtone and notifications are used independently of each other, but they both can share the same sound if the user sets them as such. Go to Settings/Sounds and vibrations and then click on "Ringtone" and set the sound you want to hear for that category.

You have to make sure notification categories is turned on. Settings/notifications/afvanced settings/manage notification categories for all apps. Then return to Google messages notification settings, tap notification categories and tap incoming messages and choose s sound. This will become your default sound for incoming messages. To change the sound for specific conversations, open the conversation, tap the dot menu, tap details, scroll to notifications and choose a sound for that conversation. That sound will remain with that conversation as long as it is active, meaning you don't delete it. Once you delete it and start another with the same participant(s), you will have to set the sound again. Since the sound is linked to the chat, not the participants, if you have multiple group chats going with some of the same participants, when each participant messages, you will hear the sound chosen for that conversation, not the sound you may have chosen for a singular participant you are having a private conversation with. In Google messages, you can also name your group texts (i.e. family talk, Mary's wedding, etc.)
