Bad Design - HW0Q990F Subwoofers has no speaker protection can easily puncher it. Open speakers no protection/ cover equals easy damage. Samsung you blew it on this design. Cannot buy it because of this.

Home TheaterAre you in the habit of sticking sharp objects into speakers? I can't swear to it, but I don't think I've ever seen a protected subwoofer. They've always been speakers in a 3-sided box, covered with felt or something-or just a naked speaker jammed into a component unit. Putting a protective shield over a subwoofer would dull the bass, which would kind of defeat the purpose.

Home TheaterWell, OK, then. Just saying, in my observations over the course of the last 30 years or so I haven't observed it but, then again, I have not been inspecting subwoofers, nor looking to buy one. It is quite possible since the last time I paid any attention whatsoever to them they changed the packaging.

Home TheaterI have have been observing Subs for the past 65 years, I am much older than that and when subs where fisty introduced in the 1960s for high end stereo systems and watch their there evolution. All came with some off cover over the speaker that where removable if side of front mounted. As for Samsung Q serious they always had a plastic type shroud cover never exposing the speaker and it was not removable. Take a look at some of their subs pictures.

Home TheaterThe Samsung sub is not a bottom firing speaker . They are side firing and exposed unlike the bottom firing speakers that are facing the floor. It not a question of sound direction it is the exposed side speakers.

Home TheaterObviously, you do not have animals and kids I guess. And the 990D sub has a protective cover which is plastic over it. Take a look . I f you do/did not have a 990D , 990C, 950B and 950A like i have and had, then you cannot know how they made their previous subs. Also the larger subs that I have like the Martin Descent i 3000 watts triple 10" speakers at 110 lbs. have metal removal grills. SVS have cover made of cloth but do have rigid rims holding the cloth that give some protection, these are also removable if you want to show the speaker. God knows why you would do that unless they like the look and not afraid of something like a bouncing ball hitting the cone and damaging it or just by a misshape and banging into it.
