Here's a solution: If the serial number is 15 digits, the 8th digit is the year and the 9th digit the month.
If the serial number is 11 digits, the 4th digit is the year and the 5th digit the month.

Every refrigerator I've ever seen has a manufacture date on the serial # tag, which is usually located on the inside front of the refrigerator.
