990 Evo Plus Temperature Sensors and Overheating

I recently purchased a 1TB 990 Evo Plus and installed it in my desktop computer. Everything was going well for the past couple of weeks until I tried playing games. Temps were fine running Cyberpunk, but I noticed something conerning when running Indiana Jones and The Great Circle.

Using HWiNFO64, I see there are 3 drive temperatures listed under S.M.A.R.T., the max temps are reading:

  • Drive Temperature : 62C
  • Drive Temperature 2 : 99C
  • Drive Temperature 3: 62C

Samsung Magician is only reporting one temperature on the Dashboard, which is currently hovering around 60C. When I look at the SMART details I see there are only raw values listed for Temperature Sensor 1 (356) and Temperature Sensor 2 (332).

I've done a bit of research to see if there's anyone else on the internet reporting similar issues, but nothing conclusive other than some sensors read the controller's temp and others are reading the memory temp. Should I be concerned about the really high Drive Temperature 2 being reported by HWiNFO?

Before I setoff on an adventure of updating the firmware and playing around with thermalpads/heatsinks, was curious if any of the knowledgable folks on this forum could share some insight. I'm currently running OB2QKXJ7 firmware. I know that 2B2QKXG7 just became available this month, but have also seen a few users reporting degraded performance when updating to 2B2QKXG7. The SSD is mounted on a MSI Z790 Tomahawk Wifi MB (between the CPU and GPU) and its in a very spacious and decently cooled Fractal Design case.

I have been looking around to see whats going on for the exact same issue. Using HWMonitor gives me temps always over 70 degrees and sometimes over 100. I actually just returned and reordered one of my SSDs because i kept getting BSODs. I am wondering if it was an issue with that specific SSD, though now that you are posting this I am wondering if it is an overheating issue.  Mine is also mounted on an MSI board but its below the GPU without the heatsink.

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I'm also going to swap it out rather than deal with further troubleshooting. Glad I'm still in the return window and the new one was delivered overnight.
