Screen will sometimes become unresponsive to touch when turned on (cover is lifted).

Problem: turn on screen by lifting cover after a while of inactivity
Randomly, screen will not respond to touch
Solution: must turn screen off then on again in order to get it to work.

Frequency: varies, seems to happen at random.

When this started happening: After the update to Android 13, One UI 5

Samsung Galaxy S7 tablet

What I did so far... Turned off Automatic unlock in the Accessories category of settings. (So far so good).

What Samsung said: seems to be "cover mode error." They wanted me to record it happening, but it's random! I can't get it to happen at will.
I've read that others were having problems with waking their screen and it becoming unresponsive, but the majority of those are on phones. Any other tablet users experience this?

Just wanted to chime in and say I'm experiencing this exact issue with my Tab S7 too. Sometimes the screen wakes up, but doesn't respond to any touch input. Only fix is to turn screen off and try again.

Only started occurring after the One UI 5 / Android 13 update.

Are you using a Samsung cover?  3rd party covers seem to have magnets which are too strong and I'm wondering if that is the case, are they messing up the process.

I'm personally using the official book cover for the Tab S7.

To add further information, in my particular case, I open the cover to the lock screen. I then use the fingerprint sensor to unlock the tablet.

Sometimes it's unresponsive after unlocking, so I don't think the case is the issue. At least, it was never an issue prior to the One UI 5 update, and I've owned the tablet for a year now.

Two things.  How frequent is it.?  Can you put the tablet into Safe Mode and see if it happens?

Also, the next time it happens immediately open the Samsung Members app, click on Support (Lower right)->Feedback->Send Error Report,  Remember to check on "Send System Data Log"

It's random unfortunately, so it's happened a couple of times a day to once every few days. The fact is, it never did this once prior to the update in November.

If I have time, I guess I could try sitting down and just keep locking and unlocking over and over again in safe mode to see if I can catch it. I don't know if that will achieve anything though as I could end up doing that for hours given the randomness.

I sent an error report today, so we'll see what comes of that.

I definitely will!

A quick update from my testing. I tried booting to safe mode to see if I could get a quick result. It didn't take long for me to get a unresponsive screen, so it happens in safe mode too.

It also does seem to be exclusive to cover wake after all. If I open and close the cover over and over again, swiping at the lock screen to test input, it will eventually become unresponsive, so it doesn't occur after unlocking as I first thought. (I usually don't interact with the lock screen. I just open the cover and unlock with the fingerprint sensor.)

I deleted my original error report and resubmitted with this additional information.

If I keep the cover open and use double tap to wake, or just unlock using the fingerprint sensor or face recognition, it seems to be fine, but that's with very limited testing.

Did you try turning off "Automatic unlock" in the Accessories category of settings? That's been working for me, but of course, you would have to develop the new habit of turning the screen off yourself before closing the cover (unless you have the screen set to turn off after a minute or less.)

Keeping the tablet unlocked is not a solution to this problem, it merely keeps the tablet from locking, to prevent the issue. Fundamentally unsafe.

When automatic unlock is set to off, you would have to remember to hit the button to turn the screen off like you would do for your phone when you're done with it. It's a matter of habit which I'm getting accustomed to. You can also set the screen timeout to turn off after 15 seconds (or more) so you won't have to worry.
