I am unable to dial extensions when calling a number. I tried all the usual--adding a comma, a star, and dialing the extension right after dialing the number--none work. What to do?

Wait for the prompt to dial the extension after the phone is answered. Many systems are programmed to not allow you to press a prompt or extension until the voice greeting is complete.

That doesn't work either!

So, you are saying that after you dial a call, the dial pad stops working?

I dial the number, then after this I try all the solutions above (comma, star, wait 2 seconds, dial the number with none of these) and nothing happens. If I dial the number, connect to the menu and wait until it gives me the extension I need and then try all of the above, it's the same--no connection. I called Samsung and had them test the phone remotely--it's working perfectly.

I'm stumped.

Have you tried clearing the cache partition or doing a factory reset? Are you willing to try an alternate phone dialer app, such as Phone by Google? If only long enough to determine if it's the dialer app itself?
I would try things in this order: try alternate phone dialer. If no joy, delete the cache partition, see if it improves. If not, last resort, factory reset and restore your phone backup.

Tried the cache and rest--no luck there. I'll look into the other--thanks. I did a quick search--it looks like others are having the same problem with various Android phones.

To dial extensions on your Samsung Galaxy A54, try using these methods, which should work for entering an extension during a call:

1. Use a Comma or Semicolon for Pauses:

When saving the number with the extension in your contacts or dialing it directly, insert a comma (,) or semicolon (;) between the main number and the extension.

A comma adds a short pause, while a semicolon prompts the phone to wait until you manually tell it to dial the extension.

Example:

With a Comma: Type the number as 1234567890,123 (where 123 is the extension).

With a Semicolon: Type the number as 1234567890;123.

After dialing, the phone should either automatically enter the extension (with a comma) or prompt you to enter it (with a semicolon).

2. Manually Enter the Extension After Connection:

If adding a comma or semicolon doesnā€™t work, try waiting for the call to connect to the main line, then manually enter the extension once the automated system prompts you.

3. Enable ā€œAuto DTMFā€ if Available:

Go to Phone > Settings > Call settings, and check for an option like ā€œAuto DTMFā€ (Dual-tone multi-frequency), which can make dialing extensions more seamless.

4. Try Using the Keypad During the Call:

Once the call connects, open the keypad (the dialer) during the call and type in the extension manually. This often works when pre-entered extensions arenā€™t recognized.

If none of these methods resolve the issue, it could be a carrier or network-specific limitation rather than a phone issue. Contacting your carrierā€™s support team may also help, as they can verify if thereā€™s anything blocking DTMF tones for extensions on your account or network.

As I've already stated, I've tried these methods and none work.
