They come with the choice of using either a physical sim or an e Sim. I have an s24 plus and use an e Sim for my line and it works great.

I assume you are referring to the SIM slot, not an actual SIM card. I don't know for sure, but I think one of the reasons for the elimination of the SD card option is that Samsung wants the space that the SIM/SD tray takes up in the phone for other electronic elements for the advanced features of the flagships. I think with the S24 (solely from what I've gleaned), right now it's dual sim - eSIM and physical SIM, and you can provision either or both. But I think the way of the future is the elimination of the physical SIM.
