Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Is there a way to manually adjust the always on display clock brightness? I can see the option on my old Samsung, just not on my new one (S24 Ultra)

Sorry to say but that feature was removed in One UI 6.1 hopefully it returns in a future update

According to this article, AOD brightness has been merged with the main screen brightness control. The author of the article said they were able to see results by turning on Auto-adaptive brightness.

I swear, this S24 Ultra is shaping up to be one of the worst downgrades in history. It is in so many ways a downgrade from my S22 Ultra . The new S24 Ultra with it's duller and washed out colors and now we have also lost color icon notifications on the Always On Display?!?! What gives Samsung? There is no longer a clock option in the Always on Display settings. We can no longer manually change the brightness of AOD or select landscape or portrait.  In my S22 Ultra I have the option of selecting the clock option and making all these changes and also uploading images and GIFs for the AOD. The AOD is something we interact with daily.  We need these options as we've grown reliant on them as past Samsung users for years. We use this portion of our screen no matter what we are doing in our lives ( working out at the gym, in an office meeting, conducting field work, etc.). Now, no such options exists, and I dont receive color icon notifications anymore!!!!  Why would you downgrade us like this Samsung?

Yes. They apparently removed the colours and made everything boring white. That's another reason I returned mine.

It is a more iOS AOD with adding a wallpaper in the background.

I was a little upset with the change at first too. Then after using it for a while despite the lack of configuration started to like it. In reality it seems to work well as an AOD. The color icons were nice but monochrome looks cleaner.

I have to disagree with the display. It is amazing. The only issue I have seen is gradient banding but otherwise it is great.

Colored notifications are available to S23 phones by using the LockStar plug-in for Good Lock. Has this feature been removed from Good Lock for S24 phones?

We get the color we pick on the lockscren clock so we have more colors to choose from cause that clock has a color wheel.

I agree about the brightness control. We need it back cause the aod is too dim. Even Apple's version has a brightness setting.

And I can't stad the dull colors and apparently Samsung has decided they're not going to fix it.
