Galaxy WatchGo to maps on watch -> hit the search symbol -> scroll down to settings -> auto-launch -> turn it all off.

Galaxy WatchIMO, the above from CigarSurgeon is the solution.
Note that if you turn all the auto-launch off, and then manually launch companion maps on the watch, it continues to control what the phone maps app is doing. I think I'd prefer that was a severable link. If anyone is listening.
