Family Hub Shopping List Not Working

It happened again. I got to the store and I tried to bring up my shopping list only to have the software tell me I need the Cooking app installed. Fine but there was an error and the app would not install. Came home and tried it locally to no avail. Since the shopping list is the only app I regularly use on this device, I now have a brick.

Fortunately, the unreliability of this system has taught me to take pictures of my grocery list just in case. 

Why do I have to have the cooking app installed? I don't use it so why is it a prerequisite for the shopping list? 

I've been a software developer for over thirty years. This is not that difficult to get right. 

Please just open this up to the Google Play store and let us download our own apps. You guys obviously have no clue what you're doing.
