Samsung has officially released the newest Portable Ssd that can Achieve Double Read and Write speeds of Older Ssd drives
The Samsung T9 Ssd comes in 3 different sizes 1TB 2TB 4TB
2,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) sequential read and write speeds on the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. The USB interface enables two lanes of 10 Gbps operation to provide 20 Gbps data

So we can actually use these directly from our Android ? Or even iPad, rather than use a computer to facilitate this ?

Correct you can backup your phone via usbc to this ssd but the usbc port is not capable of Thunderbolt speeds for data transfers, The iPad does support the Thunderbolt speeds either ,possibly in the future we may see Thunderbolt ports being added to Cell phones and Tablets, Currently Most Laptop users may only have usbc gen 3.1 and not Thunderbolt 3 or 4
